It seems that many businesses are taking their IT security for granted. In the 2013 Global Security report carried out by Deloitte, 88% of respondents indicated they were either “very confident” or “somewhat confident” that they are protected against external cyber threats.

However, are businesses somewhat overconfident with the threat landscape evolving so quickly? Over 60% of businesses rate their ability to mitigate emerging threats as “average” or “high”. 68% of respondents in the report believed that they understood the cyber risks which their business faced and that 62% of them said that they have a program in place which would address these risks. Despite having the knowledge about the risks their businesses faced, 59% of the respondents reported a breach of their IT Security within the past year.

The report suggests that every business is vulnerable and nowadays it is impossible to prevent 100% of attacks. The report states that detection and incident response are now also important steps, but prevention is a very important first step – this could include implementing programs and such as business antivirus software to address the risks.
